ABOUT THE SHOW |
Based on the Nickelodeoon Cartoon, The Spongebob Musical is a fun-filled adventure about an unlikely hero trying to save his underwater home from being destroyed. Featuring the iconic character from the TV show and songs written by a long list of pop, rock, and musical theater stars, The Spongebob Musical is entertainment for audiences of all ages as well as an allegory about climate change, accepting differences and the importance of friendship and community.
The show is adapted from a popular cartoon series, but the stage version brings some extra maturity to the characters and setting. Spongebob Squarepants lives a mostly-carefree life in the undersea town of Bikini Bottom, hanging with his friends Patrick Star and Sandy Squirrel and working at the Krusty Krab as a fry cook. However, he wants to prove to his boss, Mr. Krabs, that he has what it takes to be a leader. His opportunity comes when a nearby Volcano threatens to erupt and destroy the whole town. When the evil Sheldon Plankton and Karen the Computer convince the townspeople to ignore science and mistrust Sandy Squirrel because she is not a native of Bikini Bottom, Spongebob has to face growing civil unrest and his own insecurities to try and save his home. When developing the show, creator Tina Landau enlisted a collection of famous musicians to contribute to the score, including Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Aerosmith, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and others. Classic musical theater style mixes with gospel, rock, hip-hop and other genres. |
