ABOUT THE SHOW |
An off-Broadway hit in the early 1980s, which was turned into a cult-favorite film, Little Shop of Horrors has become a contemporary musical theater classic. The show featured a catchy score inspired by 60’s rock, doo-wop and Motown, written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, the duo responsible for Beauty & the Beast, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin.
Set in the fictional, run down “Skid Row,” Little Shop tells the story of Seymour Krelborn, a down-on-his-luck orphan employed at Mushnik’s flower shop. Seymour is in love with Audrey, his co-worker at the shop, but she is in a relationship with a sadistic, evil dentist, though she also has feelings for Seymour. Everything changes when Seymour finds an unusual looking venus flytrap plant which feeds on blood. As the plant grows bigger, it begins attracting attention, giving Seymour the chance to get out of poverty and realize his dreams. However, to satisfy the plant’s thirst for blood, Seymour must Little Shop of Horrors spoofs 1960’s horror and Sci-Fi film with a blend of dark humor, campy comedy and upbeat musical theater magic. The show features a giant, talking plant puppet, a chorus of singing and dancing street Urchins and a crowd-pleasing score, including “Suddenly Seymour,” “Somewhere That’s Green,” the Dentist’s over-the-top rock song (made famous in the movie by Steve Martin) and more.
